Assumption Life mourns the loss of former CEO Gilbert Finn

It is with great sadness that Assumption Life learned of the death of its former President and CEO, Gilbert Finn. As head of Assumption Life from 1962 to 1980, Mr. Finn played a pivotal role in the Company's growth.

Gilbert Finn is without a doubt a leading figure in Acadia and helped propel New Brunswick into the modern age. Mr. Finn was the architect of many economic and social initiatives as well as a champion for the advancement of health, higher education and economic development in the province's Acadian community.

"Everyone at Assumption Life, employees and board members alike, join me in expressing their sincere condolences to Mr. Finn's family," said André Vincent, current President and CEO. "Mr. Finn was the driving force behind the Company's expansion. It was during his time at the helm that the Company undertook its modernization, in particular its mutualization in 1969." Mr. Finn also oversaw two major capital projects, the construction of Assumption Place in Moncton and Carrefour Assomption in Edmundston, which established Assumption Life as a pillar of the business community in New Brunswick and the Atlantic provinces.

Fernando Savoie, a recently retired employee of Assumption Life, remembers well the years during which Mr. Finn headed the company. "What stays in my mind is his commitment to Acadia and his desire to see Assumption Life grow as a francophone company," recalls Mr. Savoie. "He was a man who cared about the well-being of his employees; he was interested in us and always asked how we were doing," he added.

In addition to his functions at the helm of Assumption Life, Mr. Finn actively contributed to the development of the Acadian community. He lobbied for the Caisses populaires acadiennes (1947-1950), and served as president of the Mutuelles-Vie françaises d’Amérique (1962-1964), rector of the Université de Moncton (1981-1985), as well as Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick (1987-1994).

Mr. Finn was an advocate for and key player in many institutions and organizations, including the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont Hospital (1971-1987), the New Brunswick Higher Education Commission (1971-1974), the National Bank of Canada (1977-1987), the Ordre de Jacques-Cartier for the promotion of Acadian rights, and the Conseil de la vie française (1973-1983). He was part of the Acadian delegation that went to France to lobby for support for the Société nationale des Acadiens. He was the initiator of the Conseil économique du Nouveau-Brunswick in 1973 and served as its founding president. Gilbert Finn was also instrumental in launching the daily Le Matin (1982-1985) to represent the interests and aspirations of the Acadian community.
