L’Acadie contemporaine du Grand Moncton by Georgette Bourgeois at the Assumption Gallery

5/4/2018 12:00:00 AM

In May and June, Georgette Bourgeois is showing her series L’Acadie contemporaine du Grand Moncton at the Assumption Gallery. The artist presents ten paintings. This is the fourth time she has exhibited at the Assumption Gallery.

Georgette Bourgeois’s work is associated with identity, pride and the advancement of Acadia. She looks at childhood in Acadia, before and after the 1755 deportation, through to adulthood. “I wanted to present the evolution, intellectual journey and social status of Acadians to the present day in Greater Moncton,” she says.

Her style is figurative, her paintings are in oil and the colours are clean, crisp and vivid and associated with the emotion that yellow, red and blue express. “When I create, I paint light that hits buildings, to isolate the dark shadows that give them character,” Ms. Bourgeois says. “This light symbolizes a strong, prosperous Acadia. The strong compositions and dramatic angles make the present moment last.”

The works of Georgette Bourgeois are the result of extensive research and many photos that enable her to document places. There is great attention to detail. She is influenced in this by artists Edward Hopper, one of the representatives of American realism, and Alex Colville, a Canadian realist painter. “Buildings and other place become characters of sorts,” Georgette Bourgeois says.

She has shown her work in Louisiana, France and Canada. She has over 50 solo exhibitions under her belt. She was born in Moncton and lives in Dieppe.

The Assumption Gallery exhibits contemporary, modern and popular art, traditional and folk art, as well as sculptures and photographs by professional Canadian artists. Six two-month exhibitions are presented every year. The Gallery is located at 770 Main St. in Moncton, on the ground floor of Assumption Place.
