Fritz Frischmuth's Magic with Wood and Paint at the Assumption Gallery

Until the end of August, the Assumption Gallery will be hosting an exhibition by Fritz Frischmuth,
Magic with Wood and Paint. This New Brunswick artist, originally from East Prussia, will display a collection of 30 pieces of folk art at his first appearance at the Assumption Gallery.
Fritz Frischmuth has been busy with his “hobby” since he retired in 2012. His passion for wood and acrylics led him to create folk art that showcases lighthouses. The pieces he exhibits encompass sand, rocks and beach elements.
"In Germany, I was a master welder and studied magic as a hobby. When I was 70 years old and retired to Canada, I started working with acrylic paint and added elements that compose the environment of a lighthouse. Lighthouses are the
raison d'être of my art. They have always fascinated me," says Frischmuth.
Lighthouses and a few cottages are his main sources of inspiration. And his new retirement challenge. He skilfully combines his ability to develop technical drawings with his artistic notions. The result is remarkable, a populist, somewhat naïve, folk art, which is rather unusual.
"I create fun things to entertain people. I want visitors to understand that you are never too old to accomplish things. My
Magic with Wood and Paint may inspire someone to take up their own challenge. Whatever their age. My lighthouses could certainly guide them in their search," concludes Frischmuth.
Frischmuth was born in 1943 in East Prussia, from where he had to flee to East Germany with his parents. He later migrated to West Germany before emigrating to Canada. He now lives in Colette, New Brunswick, with his wife Christel.
The Assumption Gallery exhibits contemporary and modern paintings, historical works, folk art, sculptures and photographs by professional Canadian artists. Six exhibitions, running two months each, are presented each year. Our gallery is located on the ground floor of the Assumption Place Building, 770 Main Street.
