Marjolaine Paulin presents C’est ma nature at Assumption Gallery

11/3/2017 12:00:00 AM

During the months of November and December, the Assumption Gallery will present the exhibition C’est ma nature by Marjolaine Paulin. The New Brunswick abstract artist will show 16 acrylic paintings with the theme of nature and the seasons. This is the first time she is showing at Assumption Gallery.

“The idea of this exhibition came to me while listening to the Pete Seeger song “Turn! Turn! Turn!” performed by The Byrds. ‘To everything there is a season. A time to be born, a time to die. A time to plant, a time to reap,…’ are the song’s lyrics,” Ms. Paulin said. “It is a plea for tolerance and peace in the world. The changing seasons made me think about the cycle of life and time passing.”

She created relief paintings using modelling paste and stencils, made reflections of light using metal leaf and iridescent paint and produced watercolour effects by letting liquid acrylic pigments run down the canvas. “It all started with seeing an interesting shape in nature, a sculpture or an ultra-modern building,” Ms. Paulin said.

The artist paints from her perceptions and emotions, and colour reflects her mood. She draws inspiration from what she sees, but does not reproduce it. In her paintings, colours, which convey emotion, diagonals, curves and textures evoke the beauty of nature.

She describes her style as fluid and controlled, alive and intuitive. Ms. Paulin has been influenced by artists Kazimir Malevich, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, Marcelle Ferron and Paul Jenkins. She sees painting as a way of creating her life.

“I am newly self-taught and a free agent,” Ms Paulin said. “Abstract art chose me. There are no rules for it. In it I find the freedom to express my vision of the world around me without compromise. My paintings convey my sense of urgency, fluidity and vitality. I paint because I have to. I think about it all the time.”

Ms. Paulin is originally from Caraquet and lives in Moncton. She studied art with Raymonde Fortin and has been painting professionally for some 10 years.

The Assumption Gallery exhibits contemporary, modern and popular art, traditional and folk art as well as sculptures and photographs by professional Canadian artists. Six two-month exhibitions are presented every year. The Gallery is located at 770 Main St. in Moncton, in Assumption Place.
