Dave Skyrie experiments with the simplicity of two colors for his Le rouge et le noir exhibit, on display at the Assumption Gallery in September and October. This is the artist’s first showing at the Assumption Gallery.
Dave Skyrie studied art at the Concordia University in Montreal and has been painting for over fifteen years. The artist known for his abstract and colorful work has recently decided to pull back and explore new terrain. "My recent work was very busy with lots of color. I wanted to challenge myself and see what series I could create using only two colors", explains Skyrie. That is how the Le rouge et le noir exhibit came about. Painting almost exclusively with red and black was a conclusive experiment, resulting in a contemplative collection. This experience with color, and the fact that the artist now creates nestled in his Grand-Barachois studio by the sea, has changed his artistic approach. "I take a lot more time with my painting now. I don’t have pressure to create and it gives for creations that breathe and that reflect a calm state of mind."
The artist always paints while listening to music. This explains why certain song lyrics become the name of his creations. "I listened to old songs. You might see a painting named with certain words or phrases from a Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen song. I try to make it as esoteric as I can", concludes Dave Skyrie.
The painter has taken part in over three dozen group and solo exhibitions. Skyrie also does photography and has published three poetry books. His art collections can be viewed on his Website: www.skyrie.ca
