Assumption Life’s Bobby Orr Benefit Golf Tournament: $1.4 million for ACRI

Bobby Orr, former NHL player and star defenceman for the Boston Bruins, was back in town for Assumption Life’s Bobby Orr Benefit Golf Tournament. This event is a great example of the amazing things that can be accomplished when the business and healthcare communities work together. Over the last 12 years, the tournament has raised over $1.4 million for the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute (ACRI), one of the leading biomedical research facilities in the Atlantic Provinces.

The business community once again showed its unwavering support for ACRI at yesterday’s tournament held at the Fox Creek Golf Club. By itself, this 12th edition generated $120,000 in proceeds, including $20,000 raised during the auction. New this year: An earlier online auction allowed golfers to bid for a chance to play 18 holes with Bobby Orr the day before the tournament.

Success year after year

This tournament, with Mr. Orr serving as honorary chair, brings together a number of prominent business professionals from across the country, at the invitation of co-chairs Andr é Vincent, President and CEO of Assumption Life, and Larry Nelson, President and CEO of Lounsbury Group. The event has grown so popular that the tournament was fully booked within a month after Assumption Life had sent out the invitation. Yesterday, more than 210 golfers took part in this much anticipated event.

The Atlantic Cancer Research Institute is a non-profit organization founded in 1998. With its ultramodern facilities, ACRI has become a true centre for excellence in cancer research. The three main areas of development being pursued by the Institute’s scientists are early detection, enhanced diagnosis and targeted treatment. Its multidisciplinary team of approximately45 people have expertise in genomics, proteomics, molecular biology, cell biology, bioinformatics, immunology, synthetic and organic chemistry, pathology, mass spectrometry and in vitro and in vivo testing. Through its work, ACRI is contributing to the global research effort aimed at combating cancer.
