Assumption Gallery presents Rebecca Belliveau’s "The Carnaval Red"

Starting today, and until the end of April, the Assumption Gallery will be showing a collection of artworks by Rebecca Belliveau entitled "The Carnaval Red". The inspiration for this series is born of her observations on gnosticism, Jungian psychology, Christian doctrines and occult studies. This series of paintings speaks of the integration of superficiality with human instincts, and how this adapted nature has formed us over time. The series is a visual meditation, not only on who we really are versus who we have created/evolved ourselves to be, but also a deeper, existentialist questioning of what human nature truly is.

Rebecca Belliveau is a local artist, living and working in the Moncton area. She obtained her bachelor's degree in visual art and pursued further courses in media arts in Montreal with renowned Canadian artist Irene Whittome. Having specialized during university in both painting and photography, Rebecca eventually developed her own technique, which combines both mediums to create highly textured mixed media – in a unique and contemporary style. The mixed-media paintings on canvas have a subtle sense of mystery, and appeal to the viewer’s aesthetic attraction to textures, all the while capturing and holding his attention with dreamlike images of people and landscapes. Automatism and abstract expressionism are at the core of her work, and her intent is to use visual art as the purest and most direct form of communication to express thoughts and emotions on the subject of who humans are, and where we come from.

The Assumption Gallery exhibits works of contemporary, modern and popular art, works based on history and folklore and sculptures and photographs by professional Canadian artists. Six two-month exhibitions are presented every year. The Gallery is located at 770 Main Street in Moncton, on the ground floor of Assumption Place, and is open Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
