Geneviève Bouffard's À l'horizon at Assumption Gallery

5/26/2013 12:00:00 AM

The works of Geneviève Bouffard will put some spring in the air at the Assumption Gallery beginning April29. Geneviève Bouffard’s À l’horizon celebrates the beauty and many facets of the tree. Combining techniques and applications that are a leap from her usual style, the painter from the Acadian Peninsula shows a new side with this exhibition that runs until the end of June.

With this collection, the artist steps out of her comfort zone. Acrylics are still featured, but different applications are used from one canvas to the next. At times Geneviève Bouffard puts down the paintbrush to explore other textures with the spatula or putty. She uses a softer, subtler palette in this exhibition, showing a certain maturity and nuance in her work. “I created using textures rather than the intense colours I was working with before,” the self-taught artist says. “I feel like I’ve turned a corner in my art. I’m expressing myself more gently, not trying to be as striking.”

Geneviève Bouffard describes herself as “a nature lover.” The artist, who presented À l’horizon for the first time at the Atlantic Visual Arts Festival (FAVA) in 2012, says she draws a great deal of inspiration from trees and what they represent. “Trees tell of our history and are on earth a lot longer than we are,” she says. “They are practically eternal.” With this collection Geneviève pays tribute to the trees that surround her and that, she believes, connect the past to the present through the stories they tell. “No trees were harmed in the making of this exhibition,” she says, laughing.
Geneviève Bouffard’s exhibition will grace the walls of the Assumption Gallery for the months of May and June. The Assumption Gallery exhibits works of contemporary, modern or popular art, works based on history or folklore and sculptures and photographs by Canadian professional artists. Six two-month exhibits are presented each year. The Gallery is located at 770 Main Street in Moncton, on the ground floor of Assumption Place and is open Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
